Juan Manuel Martín Sánchez obtuvo el título de Ingeniero Industrial en 1.970 y el de Doctor Ingeniero Industrial en 1.974, ambos en la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). Desde 1.971 hasta 1.976, su actividad de investigación se desarrollo en las universidades de Grenoble y Toulouse en Francia, en el Massachusetts Institute of Technology y el Charles Stark Draper Laboratory en los EE.UU., y en la Universidad de Alberta en Canadá. En 1976 presentó la primera patente sobre Control Predictivo y Adaptativo Predictivo, y posteriormente obtuvo tres patentes internacionales más en estas metodologías; la última de ellas introduce el Control Adaptativo Predictivo Experto (ADEX). En 1985, fundó la Compañía SCAP Europa, que desarrolló más de 150 aplicaciones industriales de control adaptativo predictivo entre 1986 y 1998. En 1999, fundó la compañía Adaptive Predictive Expert Control ADEX S.L. de la cual es actualmente Presidente. Esta compañía realiza proyectos de control optimizado de procesos industriales basados en control adaptativo predictivo experto en áreas tales como la química, la petroquímica, la de la energía, la aeroespacial, la metalúrgica y la naval, la del medioambiente y la climatización, entre otras. Es autor de más de 100 artículos y tres libros en control adaptativo predictivo, ha sido conferenciante invitado en sesiones plenarias de importantes conferencias, seminarios y congresos internacionales, y ha sido miembro de la mesa editorial del International Journal of Control. Asimismo, ha sido Profesor de la UPC, la Universidad de Alberta, la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y actualmente es Catedrático de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, UNED. Desde enero de 2004 hasta enero de 2009 ha sido Presidente del Capítulo Español Conjunto de Sistemas de Control y Aplicaciones Industriales del IEEE. Este capítulo bajo su presidencia ha organizado las ediciones de 2005 y 2007 del “Seminario de Aplicaciones Industriales de Control Avanzado (SAICA)”, celebradas con gran éxito en la Fundación Gómez-Pardo de Madrid. En 2009 fue nombrado IEEE Fellow por sus "Contribuciones a las Metodologías de Control Adaptativo Predictivo", fue Coferenciante Distinguido y actualmente es Conferenciante Prominente del IEEE. En octubre de 2012 se ha publicado una Edición Especial del International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing sobre Control Industrial Adaptativo Optimizado, de la cual ha sido Editor Invitado.

Juan M. Martín-Sánchez (F’ 09) obtained the title of Industrial Engineer in 1970, and Doctor Industrial Engineer in 1974, both from the Polytechnic University of Catalunya (UPC). From 1971 to 1976, his research activities were continued at Grenoble and Toulouse Universities in France, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in the United States, and the University of Alberta in Canada. In 1976, he filed the first patent for predictive and adaptive predictive control, and subsequently he obtained 3 additional international patents for both control methodologies. In 1986, he founded the company SCAP Europa which went on to carry out more than 150 industrial applications of the adaptive predictive control methodology between 1986 and 1998. In 1999 Martín-Sánchez founded the company Adaptive Predictive Expert Control ADEX S.L., of which he is currently the President. This company develops optimization projects based on adaptive predictive expert control in industrial areas such as chemical, petrochemical, energy, cement, metallurgy, naval, aerospace, environment and climatization. He has authored more than 100 publications and three books on adaptive predictive control, has given plenary sessions at important international conferences, seminars and congresses, and has been a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Control. He has been a professor at the UPC, the University of Alberta and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. In addition to his role as President at ADEX, S.L., he is also currently a full professor at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid (Open University of Spain). Between January 2004 and January 2009, he has been President of the IEEE Joint Spanish Chapter of the Industrial Applications Society (IAS) and the Control Systems Society (CCS). In 2005 and 2007 under his Presidency, the Chapter organized two Seminars of Advanced Industrial Control Applications (SAICA). These events took place with great success in the “Fundación Gómez-Pardo” in Madrid. In January 2009, Dr. Martín-Sánchez was elevated to the grade of IEEE Fellow for his “Contributions to the Adaptive Predictive Control methodologies”. During 2010 and 2011 was Distinguish Lecturer of IEEE and, at present, he is a Prominent Lecturer. He has prepared, as Guest Editor, a Special Issue on Industrial Optimized Adaptive Control of the International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing that has been published in October 2012.
